What Cage Should I Buy?

Post by Broadwaters Rattery »

Personally I am a Savic fan and do like the Savic Freddy2 cage available at PAH or often found used on FB Marketplace.
A popular cage to use as a starter cage or for pairs or trios.
A close second is the Ferplast Furat which has the advantage of an opening lid but the door closer is utterly terrible. Functional! But fiddly.
It is stackable which is also an advantage over the SavicFreddy but one big downside is that rats can chew out of the base! I have used four Freddy cages for nurseries for a long time and never had a hole chewed in the base. But I wouldn't trust older females in a Furat cage.. Though males tend to be much less destructive.
The shelves that come in these smaller cages are great and rats love them, but they are difficult to clean.

For a larger cage with full access via fully opening front doors (as opposed to a small hatch on other cages), I like the Savic Royale Suite or XL but there are other good options such as the PetPlanet cage and Little Zoo Venturer or Critter Nation.. I have never owned the latter two so will let someone else add info about those!

There isn't really a better cage than the SRS for keeping bedding inside the cage as it has a metal barrier all the way around including the front/ doors. A downside to all cages is bedding being kicked out onto the floor. It is a fact of life unless you want to spend a lot on acrylic barriers to go around the bottom or find a deep pan which fits. If you have space then a great solution is to just add a big playpen around your cage to contain everything rat and keep your room tidy!

To date, nobody has really designed the PERFECT rat cage. So be creative and have fun designing your rat room/ area :D

I absolutely agree with the above. I have Savic Freddies for my Nursery cages and Ferplasts as spares. I also think that the Coco Large is an amazing cage. It's spacious and easy to open. I believe you can change the top for the front, so you have the bigger door at the front.
