The most basic information about rat keeping is not 'what cage should I buy' but what type of enclosure should be used.
New keepers could be forgiven for thinking that vivariums or tanks are an option, thanks to pet shop displays.
But the truth is that tanks are very unsuitable due to the amount of ammonia that rats produce and their sensitivity to said ammonia.
Rats require a secure cage to live in, with good air flow.
